Over 1 billion people on earth don't have access to safe drinking water. Some people do not have clean water because they cannot afford it. The ability to provide inexpensive water filters is a huge task for outreach organizations. Providing or creating water filters that are antimicrobial can prove to be a costly adventure. If the scientists involved in this study are able to take the next step into usable filtration devices it could mean a huge boost for clean drinking water missions. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
“This would be very helpful in the developing world, or in disaster situations — <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/03/02/port-au-prince-could-be-recycled-and-rebuilt-from-itself/" rel="nofollow">like Haiti</a> — where people do not have access to safe water,” noted lead author of the paper Dr. Roger Narayan of the joint biomedical engineering department of NC State’s College of Engineering and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

As Canadians, we are fortunate to live in a country that has one of the largest fresh water supplies in the world. Not only do we have fresh water to drink but we also have the means to sufficiently filter and transport our water. You turn on a tap and clean water comes out. Unfortunately, people in other countries do not have this luxury. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
THE PROBLEM 
 
A natural disaster has just struck your country. Based on the country's wealth, you will be given a certain amount of money to build a water filter for your family. In groups of four, you will be given a 2L pop bottle to fill with materials from the chart below. You will research each of the materials from the chart. Then you will decide what you need for an effective water filtration system based on the amount of money you have.

Draw a diagram and label the contents. </li></ul>
